Chlamydia psittaci is a typical zoonotic pathogen. Humans who come into contact with pathogen-carrying birds (such as parrots, pigeons and poultry) may develop psittacosis, which is mainly characterized by fever, cough and pneumonia. Mycoplasma psittacis primarily infects avian species, causing respiratory diseases in birds; nevertheless, it also poses a potential risk of zoonotic transmission and may induce mild respiratory infections or opportunistic infections in humans.

The clinical symptoms of infections caused by these two pathogens are similar, and they are difficult to distinguish from those of common bacterial or viral pneumonia. The duplex PCR assay can directly detect pathogen nucleic acids in clinical specimens, enabling rapid differentiation of the infectious agents and avoiding delayed treatment due to misdiagnosis.

This assay can be applied to pathogen screening and monitoring in poultry farms. Both Chlamydia psittaci and Mycoplasma psittacis are important pathogens in the poultry breeding industry. The former can lead to respiratory symptoms, abortion and chick mortality in birds, while the latter can trigger chronic respiratory diseases in poultry, resulting in growth retardation and decreased egg production, which seriously impairs breeding efficiency.
